なお【尚･猶】

1 〔まだ〕 still (not); (not) yet; 〔相変わらず〕 still; 〔引き続き〕 still.

●今もなお still

・昼なお暗い森の奥で deep in the woods where it is dark even during the day.

●彼の言葉は今なお耳に残っている. I can still hear him saying it [his words].

・彼は 90 を過ぎてなおかくしゃくとしている. He's 90 years old, but still vigorous [hale and hearty].

・春なお浅し. Spring has still hardly started [《文》 is not yet far advanced].

・容疑者はなお逃亡を続けている. The suspect is still free [on the run]. | They still haven't caught the suspect.

・当地ではなお余震が続いている. After-quakes are still going on here. | There are still [We are still having] after shocks here.

2 〔さらに〕 more; 〔いっそう〕 further; still [even] more; 〔かえってもっと〕 all the more 《for [because]…》.

●なおもう一度 yet again

・なおいっそう悪いことには to make matters even worse; (what is) worse still

・なおよいことには to make things even better; (what is) still better

・なお大切なことは still more importantly; (what is) still more important

・なおも考えたうえ after further consideration; on thinking it over more carefully.

●このほうがなおよい. This is still better [even better, better still].

・締め切りまでにはなお2 週間ある. There are still two weeks (to go) until the deadline.

・なお2, 3 の例を加えておこう. Let's add two or three more [other] examples.

・なおいっそうの努力が望まれる. Still greater efforts are required.

・なおいっそうのごひいきをお願い申し上げます. Do please continue to favor us with your patronage. | We look forward to continuing to serve you.

・遅くてもかまわないが, 早ければなおよい. If it takes time, so be it, but the sooner the better. | It doesn't have to be done in a hurry, but if you can get it done quickly I'd be still more grateful.

・それがなくても困らないが, あればなおけっこうだ. I can manage without it, but having it would be even better.

・この分野はなおコスト削減の余地がある. There's still room for cost reduction in this area.

・電話もうっとうしいが, 訪ねてこられるのはなお迷惑だ. Even being phoned is a pain; being visited is even worse.

・失敗したのも悪いが, それを隠していたのはなお悪い. It's bad enough that he made a mistake; it's even worse that he covered it up.

・気持ちを言葉にすることは難しいが, それを人に伝えるのはなお難しい. Putting one's feelings into words is difficult; conveying them to another person is even [still] harder.

・彼は憎んでもなお余りあるやつだ. I more than hate him; I utterly detest him.

・会えばなお恋しさがつのる. Meeting her doesn't make me miss her any less. | Far from assuaging my longing, meeting her simply makes it worse.

・飲めないと思うとなおのこと飲みたくなる. Knowing I can't drink simply makes me want to drink even more.

・民間療法を試みてなおのこと症状を悪化させてしまった. Trying a folk remedy simply made the symptoms even [still] worse.

3 〔あたかも〕 as…; just like….

●葉の草木におけるはなお肺の動物におけるがごとくである. Leaves are to the plant what lungs are to the animal. | As lungs are to the animal, so are leaves to the plant.

・クジラの魚にあらざるはなお馬の魚にあらざるがごとし. A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.

4 〔付け加えて言えば〕 furthermore; in addition.

●なおなお書き ⇒なおなお.

●なお日程については決まり次第お知らせします. (Let me add that) we shall advise you as soon as the schedule is fixed.

・なお鈴木氏には当方から通知いたします. I would like to add that we shall communicate direct with Mr. Suzuki.

・なお上に述べたことはみだりに口外せぬこと. I wish to add that this information is to remain confidential. | This information, I should add, should not be revealed to third parties.

・今日はこれで終わります. なお来週は都合により 1 時間早く始めさせていただきます. That's all for today. Next week(, let me add,) we shall for various reasons start one hour earlier.
